"Given love and attention, the things we discard can make the world so much more beautiful."
On foot and by bicycle, Tree scans the streets of Maine for lost and tossed items -- keys, springs, toys, disposable straws, and all manner of roadside debris -- then stitches them onto fabric to create new narratives for the repurposed objects. Her work is an exploration of how humans interact with our environment as well as a thoughtful, joyous marriage of color and texture. You can follow her progress on Instagram at @RoadTrashCritters.
Tree's studio show at Handiwork is open 10-5 Wednesday-Saturday and 11-4 Sunday.
A solo exhibition of felted Wildling Creatures by Deb Butters at Maine Craft Portland.
On view October 6-31, 2023
Maine Craft Portland proudly presents a solo exhibition by Deb Butters, a multidisciplinary artist native to Maine. Much of Butters’ childhood was spent outdoors foraging: “My pockets were (and are) always full; and even now my home is full of containers of shells, rocks, sticks and natural treasures that I incorporate in my work.” Always fascinated with the world around her, Butters’ has explored a variety of mediums in her 40+ year artistic career.
“I grew up working with my hands with varied exposure to many arts and artisan skills from family, neighbors, and other teachers. Many dolls benefited from this love of creating fabric items. Later puppets and stuffed animals took shape. My dad and uncle taught me to carve and work with wood. Next was pottery, bead work, and metal smithing. I designed my own jewelry, clothing, and decor. In my late 40’s I began painting and illustration of my own books and expanded once again. I learned welding, and I cut forms from steel sheets at SMCC while earning my degree in engineering/architecture. For two years I had stewardship of an art program for developmentally challenged adults at a local program working alongside Arts for All Maine in a juried show at the Portland Museum of Art as well as starting programs for visiting artists and art programs at night stressing community integration.”
It is this varied exposure to many arts and artisan skills that brings Butters’ to where she is today. Each step of her journey is a culmination of these art forms with a concentration on Fiber Arts, where it all began. The process of finding new meaning for something and helping to translate it into that vision is central to the work. “Be it humor, beauty or both, a piece grows and changes until it gains its finished form, sometimes surprising me with the outcome.”
We invite you to explore the incredible worlds’ created by this artisan, the exhibition opens October 6 and will be available until October 31, 2023.

Calling all visual storytellers/songwriters/poets and lovers of moving pictures! Come make a Crankie with Lucky Platt.
Join Lucky for a hands-on program on the crankie—a unique moving panorama storytelling tool! Originating in the early 1800s, the crankie is a classic storytelling form created from a long illustrated scroll wound around spools and turned by hand with a crank.
In this workshop artist Lucky Platt will provide an introduction to the art form and its possibilities for expression and performance, story development through storyboard exercise, and time to create. Participants may choose to take the workshop with the intention of making their own crankie, or, as the form lends itself to collaboration—pairs or families may choose to work on one piece together. We will take a 30-minute break for lunch. All materials included—just bring your ideas!
*Note: Finalizing the artworks will likely be completed outside of the timeframe of the workshop, although it is possible to explore the form at a small scale within the timeframe.
BONUS: Crankies are often performed with poetry, spoken narrative, song, and more and workshop participants will have the optional opportunity to present their crankie as part of The Crankie Matinee, a new event for the Belfast Poetry Festival.
About the instructor: Lucky Platt is a visual artist and children’s book creator originally from northeast PA. Conceptual artist Kevin Sudeith has a unique approach to art, combining his background in painting, drawing, and ceramics with his love for ancient rock art. He creates petroglyphs - images carved into rock that can last thousands of years - to document contemporary life in a place. Since 2019, he has been carving petroglyphs along nature trails in Phippsburg, Maine representing the local nature and culture through images of birds, butterflies, boats, ships, and even Ingenuity, the Mars helicopter.
From the petroglyphs Sudeith makes ceramic casts to represent the petroglyphs to viewers who may never visit Phippsburg. This weekend will be unique, for Sudeith is exhibiting ceramics near one of his petroglyphs. Jason Carias graduated from Maine College of Art and Design in 2021 where he received his BFA in wood working and furniture design. Carias is a POC Maine based woodworker and turning artist based in Portland Maine. Carias’s focus is to create work that is ethically designed. He does this by working with locally sourced lumber to create bold pieces that showcase design and woodgrain. Carias’s designs are handmade and inspired by sculptures within furniture, nature, and art by using the process of stack lamination. Carias’s hope, through his art, is to inspire other POC youth to join the field of woodworking.
Bryan Hansen grew up in the midwest and graduated with a BFA in metalsmithing and jewelry from Maine College of Art in 2018. In reference to his childhood mindset, he fabricates, casts, and forges objects of vague whimsy that appear artifactual in nature. Hansen’s interests lie in tools, relics of supposed unimaginable significance, the augmentation of the body through said objects, and a precursory state of perception that makes up any and all of the connections we experience in our individual constructions of reality. Stripped of these heady concepts he also appreciates and pursues the beauty in simple objects and curated forms and the almost supernatural allure certain forms are capable of producing.

Artists featured in “things we lost in the: The Legacy of St. Amelia’s College of Speculative Timbre" at Sidle House (Oct. 3 - Nov. 1) This talk is from 2-3PM on October 5th.
“things we lost in the:The Legacy of St. Amelia’s College of Speculative Timbre" is a captivating art exhibition set within a unique historical narrative. The guest curator is mid-coast Maine poet, artist and musician Colin Cheney; it opens on October 3 and will be on view through November 1, 2024. This exhibition invites visitors to explore a blend of contemporary artwork and thought-provoking historic artifacts inspired by the fictional St. Amelia’s College of Speculative Timbre. A number of artist talks, musical events, and performances will occur throughout the show’s tenure.
Inspired by works such as Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s Primitive and The Museum of Jurassic Technology, guest curator Cheney creates a superfictional space where reality and fiction complicate each other. The fictional St. Amelia’s College, which was destroyed in a fire in 1996 in rural Vermont, was a sanctuary for artists exploring unconventional art, sound, and ecological studies.
“things we lost in the” features a wide variety of artworks, including paintings, photography, sculpture, and time-based video and sound art. The exhibition highlights the talents of nineteen local and international artists, including Khaila Batts, Rita Bernstein, Jordan Carey, Aminata Conteh, Epiphany Couch, Maung Day, Fadl Fakhouri, Shaina Gates, Dana Guth, Jenny Ibsen, Marcus Jackson, Lokotah Sanborn, Adam Rosenblatt, Kalyn Pavliniç, Martin Pavliniç, Kenny Shapiro, Juria Toramae, Andrew Tosiello and Zizou Zou.
Each artwork will be accompanied by text providing lyric insights into the artist’s vision and their connection to the myth of St. Amelia’s. Additionally, the exhibition includes “artifacts” from the college, such as a disassembled pump organ, burnt timbers, archival files, and scientific apparatuses. While some artifacts will be identified, others will invite visitors to contribute their own stories.
I'm committed to valuing artists time and creative energy. Please help me support our speakers with a suggested donation of $10, all proceeds will go directly to the artists.
Thank you!
- Maddy Vertenten

Make your own handmade journal, sketchbook, or photo album with guest teacher, Diana Arcadipone. Handmade books make a wonderful gift, and are a great way to exhibit unique fabric or papers you’ve collected.
Please bring light to medium-weight fabric to use for your book cover. Fabric should be a natural fiber like silk, linen or cotton. Synthetic fabric like polyester will not work, so if you’re not sure, bring a couple of options with you. Your fabric will need to be big enough to cover your book in one piece, so somewhere around 12 x 24” will work.
All other materials will be provided, but feel free to bring additional papers, buttons, or a clasp to personalize your project.
There will be a short break for lunch during this class. Students should bring a bag lunch or plan to grab food nearby.
Registration is required. Register here: https://www.fiberandvine.com/classes/bookbinding-workshop

Join Chef Jesse Steiger as he clarifies butter and turns it into ghee. Ghee is a type of clarified butter originating from India. The milk solids are removed, meaning ghee has less lactose than butter. Traditionally, ghee has been used as cooking oil, an ingredient in dishes, and in Ayurveda therapies. Infusing herbs into the ghee, such as ginger and cardamom, is the best way to acquire the healing benefits of those herbs.
After the demonstration, participants are welcome to buy some ghee and take it home in their kitchens. Chef Steiger will share more about the health benefits of ghee and how he uses it in his own recipes. Space is limited and on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The demonstration will begin at 4:00 PM and end at 5:00 PM.
