Kim Bernard will open her studio and PopUpCycler the weekend, sharing her upcycled sculpture, wares and wearables: aprons, messenger bags, totes, yoga bags, pouches, napkins, hats, earrings and waxed food wrappers... all made out of local recycled materials. Open Peace House Studio

Kids Mural Painting Activity

Join Heart of Ellsworth onsite at the Water Street Mural for a freestyle kids painting activity to connect with the Water Street Mural project in progress across the parking lot. Come learn about the fauna and flora of our region while enjoying the beauty of the woods during peak fall foliage. Join us at A Fierce Chase XC Ski Trails for a leisurely walk through the woods on mowed trails, led by a biologist. The terrain is gentle for all abilities. Our trails are located 1 mile down the Elliotsville Road off of Route 15/6 (Greenville Road) just north of downtown Monson. Look for our sign on the left. Open Studios and Tides Rise Us All Exhibition at Engine

Engine 163 Main St., Biddeford, ME

The gallery at Engine in Biddeford with be open both Saturday and Sunday from 11 AM - 2 PM showcasing our Compass Project Boat building exhibition, Tides Rise Us All: 20 years of the Compass Project. Plus guests will be able to meet some of the artists and makers that call the Engine studios home. 

The Compass Project was founded in 2002 in Portland Maine with the goal of engaging youth in hands-on, experiential, and cooperative learning through the building of wooden boats. In 2015, Engine adopted the Compass Project and partnered with local schools and colleges to bring boat building to their classrooms. In 2019 the Covid 19 pandemic forced a dramatic shift in how Compass classes were taught. Instead of in-person collaborative boat building, students were taught similar skills virtually through the building of model boats. In recent years, as restrictions have eased, we have returned to in person classes at Biddeford High School with renewed focus on helping youth develop a more meaningful relationship community and environment. Today, in addition to building boats, Compass students work on independent projects, exploring areas of personal interest, and work on projects for organizations within our Biddeford community, allowing students to see their contributions in the real world. Compass Project has brought together thousands of individuals and families through the joy of launching these vessels into the world. Tides Rise Us All is a celebration of the work completed by Compass students in the past year as we set a new course.

Featuring the work of many hands, this exhibition invites you to respond to the question, “What Anchors You?” and will seed a series of events and engagements with our 2022-2023 Compass Project Youth.

Old Jail: Colorful future coloring activity

Old Jail Lawn 40 State Street, Ellsworth, ME

The Ellsworth Historical Society will be hosting an event at the Old Jail Lawn, on State street in Ellsworth, from 1-3 pm in the afternoon of our "Art of Ellsworth" event on Saturday October 1. We have a coloring activity to allow visitors to envision the colorful future we are creating for this jail, as we dive into a grand restoration project, fueled by the receipt of grants from the Maine Community Foundation, The Maine DownTown Center’s Main Streets Foundation and private donors.

Use your creativity to color in our beautiful building on a page with room for free expression. Currently the Hancock County Sheriff’s Home and Old Jail is a prominent feature of our historic district in downtown Ellsworth, and serves as a repository for artifacts and living history of the county seat and it’s colorful inhabitants. The Ellsworth Historical Society is partnering with many in the community to create more opportunities to share our history. Come by our lawn stand and contribute your colorful artistic talents to envision the future.

Creation Station at Stained Glass Express--All week in honor of Maine Craft Weekend, enjoy 10% off the Creation Station. Come see what all the fuss is about!
Regular prices range from $18-85, and projects are designed to be completed in less than an hour (they'll go in the kiln and be ready to pick up in about one week!) All the materials and instructions are included in your "kit", but you'll assemble the kit from a huge variety of choices. Because you don't have to do any cutting, these projects are great to do with kids! No experience needed, but someone is always around if you need encouragement. We have a spacious classroom where you can work on your projects, or take them home and bring them back at your convenience to go in the kiln. Come any time during store hours (Mon-Fri 9-6, Sat 9-5); the Creation Station is always open. While you're here, check out our Gallery of work by local glass artists, and maybe sign up for a class!

Union River Story Walk – SELF GUIDED EXPERIENCE

Just behind the Ellsworth Public Library on the banks of the Union River is River Walk North's Self guided kids story walk. A partnership with Ellsworth Garden Club, Frenchman Bay Conservancy, Green Ellsworth and the Ellsworth Public Library features All Along the River, author-illustrator Magnus Weightman, a story about a Bunny Rabbit who has lost her toy duck! Bunny and her brothers jump in their boat and head down the river in search of Little Duck. Their journey takes them from the mountaintop to the open sea, but there are many other adventures for readers to follow along the way.

A group of Bar Harbor artists and makers are coming together for a Pop Up Market as part of Maine Craft Weekend. Ann Jenkins will be selling a collection of sterling and mixed media jewelry. Mary Lyman will be selling her handmade BFF Dolls. Suzanne Norgang of The Wretched Briar will be selling her handfelted wool hats. Jeanne Seronde Perkins will be selling her collages in 3D: paper mache stars + other creatures embellished w/ hand painted papers. Coloring the Downeast Scenic Rail Road

Downeast Scenic Rail 8 Railroad Siding Rd., ellsworth, ME

Take a ride on the Downeast Scenic, an adventure that takes you back to a time of elegant travel in lovingly restored one-hundred-year-old passenger coaches. For roughly an hour and 45 minutes, leisurely roll along 12 miles of well-maintained tracks that were a huge part of Maine railroad history. To celebrate Maine Craft Weekend and Art of Ellsworth, on Sunday, October 8th, in the morning 10:30 AM train ride will include coloring fun for all ages. Purchasing tickets in advance is advisable. Please join us at Portland Pottery for Maine Craft Weekend! Our gallery is open everyday 9am - 5pm and sells a collection of teacher and student work. We will offer studio tours for folks interested in seeing our various classroom spaces (wheel throwing and hand building), glazing areas, and high-fire reduction kiln. We are happy to answer questions about adult classes or other ways to engage with our community!

We also welcome you to pop down to our new, second studio location: 49 Fox St. This is a mid-fire studio where we offer private lessons, parties, youth classes, and adult intro classes.

Kids and families are invited to join us in downtown Biddeford on Saturday, October 5th for a free scavenger hunt to celebrate Maine Craft Weekend! Hunt for fall leaves at the downtown shops, then make a special leaf craft to take home!
Here's how to join the fun:
1) Download a map of the participating locations or pick up a printed copy from HOB. (Maps will be available the week before).
2) Visit the businesses on the list and get a fall leaf at each stop.
3) Once you've visited some or all of the businesses listed, stop by HOB and make a special fall craft using the leaves you've collected!

Maine Craft Weekend at Artsworth

Artsworth Studios 25 Pine St., Ellsworth, ME

A weekend of open studio activities! Artsworth annually creates this "hub" of fine arts activities in the building we share with our glassblowing neighbor, Atlantic Art Glass. It's a grand celebration of creativity by local makers, and you can find many of them here in one dynamic location.

Linda Perrin's team of glassmakers will demonstrate traditional glassblowing all day as they make glass pumpkins of all shapes, sizes, and colors! Atlantic Art Glass's studio will be turned into a glass pumpkin patch as the molten glass is pulled from the furnace, blown, and hand-formed on the end of a blowpipe. There are bleachers set up, and refreshments will be provided for your comfort as you watch demonstrations. The glass pumpkin patch charms visitors of all ages!

Artsworth is considered an MCA HUB. Local artisans will share their work at the 25 Pine St. Warehouse—fine jewelry, prints, pottery, fiber art, and more! Everyone will be showing, selling, demonstrating, and discussing how they make their work.

Come one, come all! Artsworth prides itself on being welcoming to all people and focusing on building community one event at a time. We want to see you out for this fabulous weekend—see you there!

On Saturday, October 5, 2024 stop by the studios located at 250 Anderson St, Portland from 12 - 5pm and wander 16,000 square feet of artist work spaces. Explore the life and works of 80+ artists working with diverse mediums, goals, backgrounds, ages, and experiences and watch live demonstrations including printmaking, felting, tiny stone house building, and wheel throwing.

RWS is a multimedia artist space and home to the Clay, Print, and Wood Departments. Our studios are a community where members share equipment, ideas, tools, and support. RWS aims to help artists reach their independent creative goals by providing access to shared equipment, tools, information, and community. Open studios only happen twice a year. Support local artists and learn more about RWS at these family-friendly and free events!
