The Harlow is pleased to partner with the Maine Crafts Association to bring their online collection of Maine lighting to life! In April 2021 the MCA created "The Light at the End of the Tunnel" a sourcing and informational online guide for Maine made lighting. The Harlow will illuminate this collection further by mounting an exhibition of lights, lighting, lamps and related works from the MCA members included in the guide.

Fiber Gallery Opening at No Repeats Fiberworks, a new gallery celebrating Color and Fiber. Jo Eaton, a Traditional Artist, has been creating one of a kind hats since 1972 and in 1995 began spinning her own yarns. Meet some of the artists at the Lighthouse Gallery. This autumn exhibition at Maine Craft Portland features handmade chef knives, damascus steel hammers, forged steel lamps, cookware & beyond – all masterfully made to last for generations. Nick Rossi, Jason Morrissey and Nick Wicks, all uniquely skilled in their craft and each an accomplished Maine craftsman, all approach working with steel in distinct and creative methods. This unique opportunity to view their collective work on exhibition is conveniently located in Portland’s arts district.
Maine Craft Portland is a retail gallery + resource center in the historic Mechanics Hall downtown Portland, Maine. The gallery promotes craft in Maine through exhibitions and public programming and directly benefits Maine craft artists through sales of their work. Maine Craft Portland opened in July 2018 and exhibits and sells the work of over 200 MCA member craft artists.

Drawing inspiration from the natural world and sacred geometry, artist Heather Kelly has taken the old craft of string art and elevated it into a modern and captivating body of work. From the intricate design of a sunflower’s center to the spiral of a pinecone, she is drawn to the connection we have to patterns found in the natural world, the cosmos, and in our bodies. Made with reclaimed barn boards, painted patterns, nails, and adornments of intricately woven thread and wire, Heather Kelly’s solo exhibition of geometric wall art is on view at the Center for Maine Craft through Sunday, October 2, 2022.
The Center for Maine Craft is a retail gallery presenting and promoting over 300 artist-members of the Maine Crafts Association. Stay a while and you can learn about the physics of sound, take home a simple guide and get started on your own musical journey!
The Running With Scissors Art Studios (RWS) annual 6x6 exhibit and open studios are happening in Portland, Maine during Maine Craft Weekend (MCW)!
Kick off your celebration of craft on Friday night from 5-8pm for an informal artist meet and greet and exhibit at Belleflower Brewing Co. (66 Cove Street). On Saturday and Sunday Explore the life and works of 80+ artists working with diverse mediums, artistic goals, backgrounds, ages, and experiences and wander over 16,000 square feet of private and open-air studios and communal work spaces in the clay, print, wood, and paint studios at 250 Anderson Street from 10am - 5pm on Saturday and noon - 4pm on Sunday. Support local artists and learn more about RWS at these family-friendly and free events! All visitors are asked to please wear a mask.
RWS’s goal is to help artists reach their independent creative ambitions by providing access to shared equipment, tools, information, and community. The 6x6 exhibit is a way to share members' diverse styles and talents in an accessible and unifying format (where each piece is 6" x 6" and up to 6" deep). The exhibit will be up through the end of November. RWS open studios happen only twice a year, during MCW and the RWS Holiday Market.

Markings Gallery is pleased to join the MCA Studio Tour Weekend this year! We represent over 50 Maine artisans and you will be able to visit a few in the gallery, talking about their work with some demonstrating parts of their techniques. You can ask questions of them and watch while in the process of creating their pieces. Come see the inner workings of a busy papermaking studio and learn all about the craft of handmade paper. Stephanie will introduce you to a variety of fibers and techniques while sharing the process of turning pulp into paper. Watch her form sheets from the vat using her collection of unique papermaking tools, and peruse a wide variety of finished papers available. Linocuts by her husband Peter Hedstrom will also be on display.
The Ellsworth Historical Society will be hosting an event at the Old Jail Lawn, on State street in Ellsworth, from 1-3 pm in the afternoon of our "Art of Ellsworth" event on Saturday October 1. We have a coloring activity to allow visitors to envision the colorful future we are creating for this jail, as we dive into a grand restoration project, fueled by the receipt of grants from the Maine Community Foundation, The Maine DownTown Center’s Main Streets Foundation and private donors.
Use your creativity to color in our beautiful building on a page with room for free expression. Currently the Hancock County Sheriff’s Home and Old Jail is a prominent feature of our historic district in downtown Ellsworth, and serves as a repository for artifacts and living history of the county seat and it’s colorful inhabitants. The Ellsworth Historical Society is partnering with many in the community to create more opportunities to share our history. Come by our lawn stand and contribute your colorful artistic talents to envision the future.
Open studio all day. Circling the Square Fine Art Press member Kris Sader will be printing a 3-plate color monotype on press. This is an exciting way to develop original imagery and serial prints.
Todd Watts will give a talk and answer questions about the “Made not Taken” exhibition at the Gascoine Gallery, on October 2, between 2 and 4pm.
The exhibition comprises the work of seven artists, and photographers all, inventing and innovating within the photographic medium. They create images that do not document events. Their artworks are the events.
Each of these artists has been a resident at Monson Arts, the Abbott Watts Residency, or produced their work at the Watts Studio.
The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm. It will also be open Sunday, October 2 for Maine Craft Weekend.

For the 2021 Belfast Poetry Festival, artist Rebecca Goodale and poet Jefferson Navicky rented a campsite for a week in September at Wolfe’s Neck Farm Campground near where they both live. For their Campsite Residency, they spent the week creating images of tents, writing swimming poems, doing some actual swimming, and walking the campgrounds in search of new and compelling tent structures to draw. The result of this process was their collaborative project, “Future Tents." Later that year, Rebecca created an artist’s book of the same name, which included Jefferson's poem and hand-colored drypoints.
Please join Rebecca & Jefferson as they talk about their collaboration, the importance of self-made residencies, and the general creative spirit necessary to collaborate. Jefferson will read a few poems and Rebecca will exhibit her artist's book, Future Tents as well as unframed drypoints and serigraphs inspired by Wolfe’s Neck farm and campground.
The public is encouraged to participate in this lively dialogue about artistic collaboration in Freeport.

Mentors + Apprentices: Work from Maine + New Hampshire's 2023 Craft Apprentice Program opens Friday, October 6, 5-7pm
The Maine Craft Association’s Craft Apprentice Program, developed and offered in partnership with the Maine Arts Commission & the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen, provides mentor craft artists and apprentices the opportunity to learn, create and connect. The program is designed to advance and expand the apprentice's craft studio practice and professional experience.
Nine mentor artist + apprentice pairs were selected for the 2023 program cycle (six from Maine, three from New Hampshire) and have worked side by side for seven months. Apprenticeships focused on natural dyeing & hand weaving, book arts, wood instrument creation, printmaking, leather working, pottery foundational skills, Nerikomi ceramics, tile making & more!
New work created during the apprenticeship period will be on view in the 2023 Craft Apprentice Program capstone exhibition, on view at Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts, October 6 - 30, 2023.
The opening reception is free and open to the public! Join us in celebrating the achievements of the nine 2023 apprenticeships on Friday, October 6, 5-7pm at Watershed’s Barkan Gallery (103 Cochran Road, Edgecomb). The MBA's Handmade Marketplace will be held on October 7th & 8th from 8-3 at Somerset Abbey, 98 Main Street, Madison, Maine 04950. Event is Rain or Shine and will be under the big top and inside the Abbey so the weather won't interfere with our fun!
During this 45-minute indoor cycle class we will embark on our signature meditation ride. The studio will be filled with art, various mediums, from local Saco-based artist Ramune Bulmer. Ramune's art is inspired on her Lithuanian roots, Maine, nature and the supernatural. This ride will be aligned with the emotion and intention of the art allowing participants to connect with the work at a more personal level, as we sweat and meditate. The artist will kick us off by sharing the intention and meaning behind her pieces.
The studio will remain open for an hour after class, accompanied by light refreshments, to allow individuals to speak with the artist and view the artwork in more detail.
More than 70 vendors are at the United Farmers Market of Maine in downtown Belfast. Located a few steps off Main Street, near plenty of public parking, the market is open on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. You will find makers of all kinds including food, home goods, jewelry, ceramics, flowers, fabrics, and so much more!

This is our 5th annual Penquis Valley HS Craft Fair (we missed 2 years due to COVID). Local craft and food artisans, artists, and authors, along with school clubs and community non-profits offer a variety of item. There is also a basket raffle and lunch options available. Mary Lyman will be selling her handmade BFF Dolls. Suzanne Norgang of The Wretched Briar will be selling her handfelted wool hats. Jeanne Seronde Perkins will be selling her collages in 3D: paper mache stars + other creatures embellished w/ hand painted papers. Karen Ressel of The Flowered Apron will be selling aprons, potholders and baby cloths. Karen's bakery will be open and fully stocked with delicious baked goods. Our Multi artist event that hopes to draw attention to some of Maine's less popular residents: The mightly Sturgeon graces our invitation (as rendered by Lisa Pixely of Grand Army Arts), and serves as a reminder of that mythic, sometimes frightening creatures are vital to our eco system.

We are happy to be opening our 16,000 sq ft fine art studio workspace housing Clay, Wood & Print departments as well as many other mediums serving over 80 artists Saturday in Portland's East Bayside neighborhood. Tour the workspace, meet the artists, watch demos, get interactive with Pottery Painting with Armstrong Pottery, and live t-shirt printing from woodblocks. Free and open to all. Social Fabric is a series of workshops exploring the power and potential of art and co-creation to build connection and belonging in our communities. Workshop offerings are from artists working in various processes, including printmaking, book arts and textile techniques. Participants will explore the material meanings and rich metaphors of thread and fabric to imagine new ways of weaving together a stronger social fabric through making and connecting.
The workshop series launches with artist Evelyn Wong of Fireball Bookbindery on Maine Craft Weekend, Saturday, October 7. Join Evelyn for the day at Hinge with a beading circle from 12-2 and a bookmaking workshop from 3-5. Attend one or both workshops. Registration is required.
