Crazy Quilt Needle Case Workshop – Taught by Jean Bragan, Fiber Artist
HOURS: Saturday, October 5
What’s in a woman’s story? -Creating a Crazy Quilt Needle Case

Crazy quilts were all the rage after the Civil War in America. Many of the women used sewing as a creative outlet to tell a story about their lives. Participants will think about their own stories and create a Victorian needle case learning crazy quilt era embroidery stitches. During this six hour workshop, participants will learn and construct a small, crazy quilt block to be used as the cover for a needle case.

I will be showing these works, along with the materials used to create them, at my open studio. Hopefully, I will also have a video of my felt-work process to be shown throughout the open studio–come check it out!

Exhibition | Katharine Cobey: A Different Voice
HOURS: Friday Oct 4, 5-8pm Opening Reception (Free and open to the public) + Saturday and Sunday, 10am-5pm (Admission required)
The Farnsworth Art Museum presents a Maine Craft Weekend Opening Night event with a free public exhibition preview n Friday, October 4, from 5–8pm as part of First Friday.

2010 MCA Master Craft Artist Katharine Cobey of Cushing, ME builds three-dimensional forms by knitting with unusual fibers, metal wires, and plastics. Her stitches give shape to her viewpoints, integrating and shaping magical costumes or emblems of memory and loss. She started knitting when she was eleven as she watched her grandmother. Not until after she had become a published poet and had raised a family did she return to knitting on another level, using the process as a means toward building sculptural forms. Knitting for Cobey over time has become a vehicle to express feelings and to comment upon sometimes difficult social issues that she once articulated through her poetry. This exhibition includes a selection of Cobey’s fiber sculptures.

HOURS: Friday – Sunday, 10 – 6pm
Start your Open Studio experience with a tour of the house featured in Down East Magazine, February 2016  with the gardens dubbed “The Western Maine Botanical Garden”. Anywhere along your way through the enclave—house and cabin—where both artists live and work, you will find the Pop-Up Shop full of art treasures; some have fixed prices, some are priced “as you wish”—have fun finding your price!

Expect to be surprised and delighted by the abstract art you will see. You will find paintings large and small; hand-knit heirloom quality Christmas Stockings, mittens and hats; paper sculpture houses; the 2020 Homage to a Calendar; gift tags; artist journals and lots more.
