Watch local handmade papers artist Gigi Sarsfield as she works her magic with the making of lampshades at Port O' Call. With all of her own handmade fibrous, textured papers, Gigi crafts beautiful shades that will add ambiance to any room for years to come. Lucky's debut picture book Imagine a Wolf (Page Street Kids 2021) was a 2022 Maine Literary Award Finalist, and she'll be reading her book with you and sharing a bit about the craft of writing and illustrating. She'll also be leading a couple of super fun book-related art activities. Without giving too much away, let's just say that there will be wolves! Want to show your love for independent bookstores? Markings Gallery is pleased to join the MCA Studio Tour Weekend this year! We represent over 50 Maine artisans and you will be able to visit a few in the gallery, talking about their work with some demonstrating parts of their techniques. You can ask questions of them and watch while in the process of creating their pieces. The gallery will be featuring them from 10:30 AM to 5 PM on Saturday, October 1, and from 10:30 AM to 4 PM on Sunday, October 2.
Come see the inner workings of a busy papermaking studio and learn all about the craft of handmade paper. Stephanie will introduce you to a variety of fibers and techniques while sharing the process of turning pulp into paper. Watch her form sheets from the vat using her collection of unique papermaking tools, and peruse a wide variety of finished papers available. Linocuts by her husband Peter Hedstrom will also be on display.
The Ellsworth Historical Society will be hosting an event at the Old Jail Lawn, on State street in Ellsworth, from 1-3 pm in the afternoon of our "Art of Ellsworth" event on Saturday October 1. We have a coloring activity to allow visitors to envision the colorful future we are creating for this jail, as we dive into a grand restoration project, fueled by the receipt of grants from the Maine Community Foundation, The Maine DownTown Center’s Main Streets Foundation and private donors.
Use your creativity to color in our beautiful building on a page with room for free expression. Currently the Hancock County Sheriff’s Home and Old Jail is a prominent feature of our historic district in downtown Ellsworth, and serves as a repository for artifacts and living history of the county seat and it’s colorful inhabitants. The Ellsworth Historical Society is partnering with many in the community to create more opportunities to share our history. Come by our lawn stand and contribute your colorful artistic talents to envision the future.

Mentors + Apprentices: Work from Maine + New Hampshire's 2023 Craft Apprentice Program opens Friday, October 6, 5-7pm
The Maine Craft Association’s Craft Apprentice Program, developed and offered in partnership with the Maine Arts Commission & the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen, provides mentor craft artists and apprentices the opportunity to learn, create and connect. The program is designed to advance and expand the apprentice's craft studio practice and professional experience.
Nine mentor artist + apprentice pairs were selected for the 2023 program cycle (six from Maine, three from New Hampshire) and have worked side by side for seven months. Apprenticeships focused on natural dyeing & hand weaving, book arts, wood instrument creation, printmaking, leather working, pottery foundational skills, Nerikomi ceramics, tile making & more!
New work created during the apprenticeship period will be on view in the 2023 Craft Apprentice Program capstone exhibition, on view at Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts, October 6 - 30, 2023.
The opening reception is free and open to the public! Join us in celebrating the achievements of the nine 2023 apprenticeships on Friday, October 6, 5-7pm at Watershed’s Barkan Gallery (103 Cochran Road, Edgecomb). Can't make it to the opening reception? The gallery will be open Monday - Friday, 1:30pm - 4:30pm, or by appointment, for the duration of the exhibit!

Tour the workspace, meet the artists, watch demos, get interactive with Pottery Painting with Armstrong Pottery, and live t-shirt printing from woodblocks. Free and open to all. Social Fabric is a series of workshops exploring the power and potential of art and co-creation to build connection and belonging in our communities. Workshop offerings are from artists working in various processes, including printmaking, book arts and textile techniques. Participants will explore the material meanings and rich metaphors of thread and fabric to imagine new ways of weaving together a stronger social fabric through making and connecting.
The workshop series launches with artist Evelyn Wong of Fireball Bookbindery on Maine Craft Weekend, Saturday, October 7. Join Evelyn for the day at Hinge with a beading circle from 12-2 and a bookmaking workshop from 3-5. Attend one or both workshops. Registration is required.

During this 60-minute yoga class the studio will be filled with art, various mediums, from local Saco-based artist Ramune Bulmer. Ramune's art is inspired by her Lithuanian roots, Maine, nature and the supernatural. This class will be aligned with the emotion and intention of the art allowing participants to connect with the work at a more personal level, as we sweat and flow. The artist will kick us off by sharing the intention and meaning behind her pieces.
The studio will be open the hour prior to class, serving light refreshments, to allow individuals to speak with the artist and view the artwork in more detail.
