We’ll play around with some of our relief blocks, etching and collograph plates using the presses combining matrixes with a variety of materials and other techniques such as collage, stamping, frottage, and stenciling to make monotypes. A fun day of print play!

HOURS: Saturday 10-6pm & Sunday 10-4pm

Catherine Gibson is a ceramic artist working on Orr’s Island in Harpswell. Her recent work is mostly handbuilt, burnished, unglazed and smoke fired in an above ground outdoor pit fire kiln repurposed from an old electric kiln. The pieces are fired in saggars using a variety of colorants, seaweed and other combustible organic materials. Weather permitting, we will be loading and firing the kiln on Saturday and opening and unloading the kiln on Sunday (always a bit like Christmas as we get to see the unpredictable effects created by the fire).

Robert Gibson

Robert Gibson

In addition to Catherine’s ceramic vessels and sculpture you will be treated to Robert Gibson’s paintings in and around their studios. Robert says of his work “Painting is an exploration of life energy through observation and invention, working to create an interpretation of external reality that sings, heightening color relationships, intensifying energy patterns and simplifying form to express a feeling of abundance and joy.”

Tours of the studios and discussion will happen throughout the weekend, with impromptu demonstrations by request. Pottery, sculpture and paintings are available for purchase.

Kate Mess

Jonathan Mess creates experimental works using reclaimed ceramic materials. Art critic Daniel Kany writes, “Mess’ slabs usually act like the unruly child versions of paintings. Their lines are wild, and their surfaces are varied and thickly textured with glazes, slips, fissures and irascibly independent materials that refused to be melted into line. In terms of ceramics, Mess’ casual boldness is remarkable.” He was awarded the Maine Arts Commission’s 2015 Contemporary Craft Fellowship and more, and his work shows nationally and internationally.

Kate Mess creates contemporary jewelry and occasional objects that are bold and edgy in both form and concept. Her work ranges from colorful enameled collections inspired by her coastal Maine environment, to eye-catching handmade wire chains designs, to delicately textured custom bridal jewelry. She designs and makes all jewelry by hand in her Midcoast Maine studio, and her work has exhibited both nationally and internationally.

A builder by trade, Mark became inspired by the shapes and forms he saw in the woods and on the beaches of Maine. This inspired him to create his line of stone products and rustic furniture. Over 90% of his work is made from found materials, such as stones, twigs, and burls which he has gathered from the forests and approved beach sites on the coast of Maine. Many pieces are completed strictly with hand tools; each piece is unique, dependent upon the raw materials used.

“I love a lot of things…like the beauty of Maine stone and the feeling I get while on the beaches and in the forests of Maine. The shapes and forms I see inspire me to create my line of natural stone products and Rustic furniture. I love my two sons, Ben and Blaine who help me create our line of beautiful natural products. Together, we gather the natural material with which we make our stone and twig products. I love creating graceful and useful products for your home, office and gardens. These items are carefully crafted and will last for generations to come. Visit Willy Reddick’s studio in an 1850’s barn in beautiful Belfast where she continues her pursuit to satisfy her insatiable need to make things. In addition to designing and manufacturing her own line of Willy Wires jewelry and decorative ornaments for close to 20 years, Reddick also has been working professionally as a painter and white line woodblock printmaker, showing her work in galleries and museums around the New England area. For 25 years she was a freelance designer handpainting prototypes for the toy industry and was a founding partner of Aarhus Gallery in Belfast.
