For those who have not visited our studio and showroom, this art form of hand carved moose bone is done in the tradition of the Maori of New Zealand. We live in New Zealand in the winter and have learned the techniques of the Maori over the 25 years we have been traveling there. Our company has been specializing in bone carvings for 21 year. We will share insights into the traditions and origins or our designs. All visitors may enter for a free carving. Drawing will be held on Dec. 15. No purchase necessary. The carvings are best appreciated when they are touched as they are small sculptural works of art with a feel of ivory. Each carving is signed and registered. Carvings are made from recycled moose bone, a bi product of the annual moose hunt.

Saturday, October 1, 2-4pm: The Framemakers presents ONE FOOT IN ANOTHER WORLD Poetry Reading with Bonnie Bishop. Bishop says, “Poetry has been a part of my life for as long as I could read and write. However over the past eight years it has become a daily practice resulting in hundreds of poems mainly about animals. From this collection I culled about sixty of my favorites, included a few of my illustrations, and self-published them in a commercially printed book called ONE FOOT IN ANOTHER WORLD. On Saturday, October 1, I will read a selection chosen randomly by the audience. One of my original prints will be given as door prize. I hope to see you there!”  This poetry reading is free and open to the public.

Workshop at The Framemakers

Accordion Book Workshop at The Framemakers

Sunday, October 2, 1-5pm: THE AMAZING ACCORDION BOOK WORKSHOP (Note: This event requires registration by September 18 and has a fee) What you thought a book should be–a cover, pages with words–is no longer true. A book can be almost anything. The only essential ingredient is imagination. The accordion book form is essentially a long piece of paper like a scroll that has been folded into pages. Today it is used as the basis for many artist books. In this workshop, you will learn how to make the accordion with a detachable cover and explore various adaptations to personalize your creations. These may include double-folds, triangles, and pop-ups. Basic materials and most tools will be provided, but students will need to bring a pencil, scissors, ruler, an x-acto knife, a glue stick, and a small cutting mat. In addition you might want to bring medium-weight decorative papers, unneeded drawings, watercolors, or prints to use for enhancing the covers. This is a great workshop for teachers! Feed your own creativity and learn something to teach your students. minimum 8, maximum 10 students; last day for registration is September 18th) Price: $100 plus $5 materials fee

Instructor Bonnie Bishop has a BS in Art from Skidmore College and an MFA in Illustration from Syracuse University. She has taught Book Arts at Colby College, UM, MECA, and KVCC as well as workshops at her home studio. Her books are in several Special Collections including Bowdoin, UNE Maine Women Writers Collection, Skidmore, and Syracuse. Currently she is a happy full-time book artist and writer.

The Wesserunsett Arts Council (WAC) will be holding the 7th annual Open Studios Tour on Saturday October 1st, 2016 from 10am until 6pm. During the event, over 20 artists from Mercer to Ripley to Solon (and beyond) open their homes and studios to guests and visitors. Each studio is a unique look at how each art form is created, like sculpture, felt and woodworking. The arts council has held this event for years and finds it to be a crowd favorite. Serena Sanborn, who sits on the board of WAC, says, “it is one of my favorite events of the year and I talk to people each year who are amazed by this journey into the woods to see art. I have friends that come each year from Portland for the tour. They marvel at each house! Sometimes the homes of artists are as much a part of the experience. This popular event is a glimpse into the lives of the creative and talented neighbors that surround all of us here in Central Maine. To find out more about the event, go to Wesarts.org. There is a map there and information on all the participating artists
