HOURS: Open Saturday & Sunday 10am-4pm
Liz Marks is a ceramic artist specializing in ceramic tile wall hangings. She has created numerous indoor and outdoor murals along the east coast- the largest spanning over forty feet at a Miami Beach business. Much of her work involves carving large slabs of clay into handmade tiles and using a Raku kiln to fire these pieces. Liz says, “What I love about using the Raku kiln is that it’s a much more hands-on and an involved process than using an electric kiln. There can be unexpected surprises, both good and bad and that’s what makes it exciting.”

Liz will open up her home studio she shares with her husband Mike Marks. Both artists are members of Fore River Gallery in Portland’s Old Port. Mike’s oil paintings focus on dramatic landscapes. When not at his easel, Mike is at his jeweler’s bench. His latest jewelry is called ‘Heavy Anchors’, a nautical based line using etched metal and recycled material including leather from old show factories and repurposed sail hardware. During Maine Craft Weekend Liz will fire her Raku kiln(weather permitting) multiple times. Visitors are permitted to watch, take photos and ask questions throughout the process. While the kiln is firing she will also be carving a new series of work from a clay slab. Mike will assist with the firing process and will also be etching brass and copper plates to create new wall panels.
